Lavina Wines reaches century award milestone with ‘The Riedel Trophy for BEST Single Varietal Red’ awarded to the Elicere 2012 Cabernet Franc

Today the team at Lavina Wines are celebrating two very special achievements:

The Royal Melbourne Wine Awards (formerly known as The Royal Melbourne Wine Show) awarded the Elicere 2012 Cabernet Franc the prestigious Riedel Trophy for Best Single Varietal Red (with 96 points), marking Lavina Wine’s 100th award across the portfolio since the tally began in 2008.

The Royal Melbourne Wine Awards judging panel includes two international judges offering global wine knowledge and perspective to taste over 3,000 submissions from around Australia.  The awards winners are announced at the annual dinner at which Lavina Wines was present to accept this prestigious trophy.

Tim Whitrow, Chief Winemaker of Lavina Wines stated “We are extremely proud to have the Cabernet Franc recognized as a Trophy winning wine along with being shortlisted for the acclaimed Jimmy Watson trophy.  The stunning berries were grown in the vineyard that surrounds the Lavina Cellar Door in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale.  Winning an award for our wines is one thing that we will never tire of and we are delighted to celebrate our 100th award across the range.  This is a wonderful achievement for Lavina Wines”.

The Elicere 2012 Cabernet Franc is a wonderful varietal expression of McLaren Vale terroir with juniper and blueberries, sage and mint with supported undertones of patchouli and a balance of subtle French oak.  The texture is soft with fine tannin integration and seamless natural acidity, leading to a pleasant savoury, lingering finish.

In addition to the Elicere 2012 Cabernet Franc, Lavina also won a Gold medal (with 95 points) for the Elicere 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, entered in the Best Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Bordeaux Varietal blend category.

Lavina Wines is extremely honoured by the success of the Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in the 2013 Royal Melbourne Wine Awards.
